Quantum mechanics describes the microscopic world in an excellent way. Our daily experience does not provide evidences of the relevance of the quantum formalism in the macroscopic reality. In this seminar, I will argue that quantum effects at the macroscopic scales are indeed possible and, in fact, are very relevant to understand the way Nature behaves and how we could be able to construct new technologies based on such a new paradigm.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

MauroMAURO PATERNOSTRO

Mauro Paternostro received his Laurea in Fisica Teorica from Universita’ degli Studi di Palermo. After the award of his PhD in Quantum Information Theory at Queen’s University Belfast, he was Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellow, AWF Fellow (at University of Vienna) and EPSRC Career  Acceleration Fellow. In 2008 he was appointed Assistant Professor at the Centre for Theoretical Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics (CTAMOP), Queen’s University Belfast, where he has contributed to establish the Quantum Technology Group, which he now leads with Gabriele De Chiara and Alessandro Ferraro. Since 2013, Paternostro is Full Professor and Director of Research at CTAMOP, where he works on quantum information theory, quantum optics, and quantum thermodynamics. He was appointed Visiting Professor at Universitaet Ulm (where he was von Humboldt  Fellow), the Federal University of ABC in San Paolo, and Sapienza, University of Rome.
